I
have a BA in both architecture and visual arts, and consider myself
a designer in the broadest sense. I also have a strong interest in
new technology and consequently new technological spaces. I am taking
this class as part of my March concentration which focuses on technology
as medium for individual expression, and I feel this course will give
me a solid understanding of new possibilities of expression through
the medium of the web. I would like to concentrate on a project that
is related to the idea of creating more intuitive and free-flowing
web environment. I have knowledge of some html, and I know flash.

I
am an AI researcher working on computational models of emotions, behavior,
and learning. Currently working on robotic platforms at the AI lab,
with particular emphasis on the design of control architectures and
intelligent agents. Previous to coming to MIT, I was a software engineer
in South America. Strong skills on Object-oriented development, C++,
Smalltalk, and the like, but little knowledge of UML. I am also a
co-founder of a B2B e-marketplace for the finance sector (still on
our quiet period ;) e) Tell us what you would like to "get out of"
this course: I think the idea of applying architectural concepts and
views to virtual space is fascinating. I want to learn more details
about this approach, and less about the "geeky" side that I am more
used to. I also want to be able to learn more about UML and XML, about
legal issues, and about anything that is related to the instantiation
of e-commerce sites.

My
educational background includes a Bachelor in Design with a Business
Administration minor, as well as a Masters of Building Construction.
My professional experience includes design work I have done for the
last ten years while attending classes both in Florida and Massachusetts.
It is in these two environments that I have acquired skills in design
and rendering software, planning and estimating software, as well
as HTML and minor Java coding. Course Interest: I am interested in
this course for its ability to create both conceptual and technical
solutions. As we are in an educational setting, I think we have the
possibility to visualize advantages and potential challenges in online
education. This coupled with the ability to work in XML and UML offers
an opportunity that is seldom found in our environment. What specifically
interests me about the topic is the differentiation between distance
and non-distance learning. What are the technologies and processes
required to offer extended or enhanced education to students that
physically attend classes? How can these be integrated or dislocated
from distance learning? It is these as well as many other questions
that I would like to explore while learning the parameters of e-commerce
/ education.

I
received my Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1993 from the University
of Houston. During the past 7 years I have worked in the profession;
of which, the last 4 years I have been a project designer with Gensler
architects working on airports. During this time I have become very
interested in the growing role of computer and communication technologies
in the design process which has resulted in my coming to MIT. Most
of my computer experience is in 3D modeling, CAD, and multimedia.
I am currently taking a Java programming course which is my first
real experience with computer programming (besides reading "The Complete
Idiot's Guide to Creating a Web Page" this past summer which gave
me some HTML knowledge). e) As mentioned above, my area of study is
in exploring the role of computer and communication technologies in
the design process. I am particularly interested in the use of the
Internet as a means to collaborate with clients and consultants. I
hope to gain from this class a critical and technical understanding
of Internet communications which potentially will lead to further
research through my Thesis project and ultimately professional implementation.

skills - microstation - adobe photoshop - adobe illustator - adobe
pagemaker - autocad (some) - 3D Stdio Max (as renderer) - microsoft
stuff - dreamweaver (a bit) f) I hope to learn about the 'real' dynamics
of the internet and web based applications. The internet represents
a certain amout of ease. However, I am aware of the behind the scene
activity. Aware, I say. I would like to understand the business and
legal sides of the internet tech revolution. I had to learn second
hand about the industrial revolution but this is a chance to learn
and eventually use knowledge while such a powerful 'new' revolution
is occuring. As an architect I am particulary interested because of
the design possibilities. Design can be no more than good without
a technical understanding. By understanding the tech, business and
legal sides more evenly, I believe my abilty to use design towards
web based applications will increase exponetially. I look forward
to working in the class to develop html which responds to necessity.
In the case of education, interesting and throught provoking design
is critical. A well thought out organizational structure to educational
commerce as well as dense and dynamic content should be created. How?
I don't know the answer to that yet. . .but. . .this class will provide
the pieces of knowledge necessary to chase down the answer.

I
have an architectural major as an undergrad, and have extensive skills
in using many graphics program. I am capable in autocad, photoshop
and other architectural/graphics programs as well. I also know media
programs such as premeiere and aftereffects. As for web programs,
I know Director as well as Flash. From this course, I like to learn
about the structure of web material and information. Rather than just
the visualization of information, I would also like to learn the organization
of abundance of information. I believe that the cyberworld is lacking
a lot of structure, and I hope this class will give me inspiration
on how to start a business, site development, as well as the structure
of the information.

to the teachers and students promises a broad perspective on the subject.
I hope to aquire an understanding of the status of e-commerce (and
other internet related subjects): what is e-commerce, how does it
work etc. I imagine we will then discuss the possibilities and possible
limits of e-commerce and e-learning (i.e. beyond what we already know
we will hypothesize on what could and/or should be). Finally I hope
to practically apply this knowledge and develop a project that will
draw upon what we learned while also testing new possibilities.

Previous
to undertaking this program, I was Managing Director responsible for
all trading and derivatives in the Emerging Markets Sales, Trading
and Research (EMSTR) group at BankBoston Robertson Stephens. My aim
in this course is to better understand the technlology of the Internet
itself, as well as getting some ideas regarding the best architectures
and infrastructures for internet content and services. Part of my
motivation for undertaking the MOT program was my belief in the eventual
dis-intermediation of financial services. If I am to be a leader in
that development, or if I am to help lead other developments in an
industry in the near future, I belive I require a better understanding
of technology and the application/design thereof. In particular, I
am quite interested in XML and the relevant issues associated with
it.

My
background is in architecture; I completed my undergraduate studies
at the University of Florida, receiving a Bachelor of Design. My technical
skills center around architecture related softwares (i.e. CAD, StudioVIZ,
Photoshop, Pagemaker, etc.) e) I believe the technology of today is
only in it's infancy, especially in regards to architecture. The potential
for architecture in e-commerce has yet to be realized; the Architect's
design expertise and societal understandings have been vastly untapped
by technology. Today's user interfaces lack cultural context; which
I believe is key to the outreach potential of e-learning systems and
information architecture. I seek to acquire the necessary tools to
help advance these issues in today's research, and to hypothesize
further implications on the profession of architecture from a design
and practice standpoint; as well as gaining a better understanding
of e-commerce from a business and legal perspective.

no
coding experience (yet) but I currently work extensively in software
and web packages that do include script editing or open source coding,
like Alias | Wavefront Maya and Macromedia programs. I use 3d modeling
and rendering packages often and with facility to demonstrate and
communicate both architectural design concepts and built form. I am
recently fascinated with the structural and intellectual relationships
between architectures of the physical and digital/web environments.
e] I would like to learn some database programming such as uml or
xml because the correlation between creating and sharing a creative
enterprise such as architecture or design is often complex. A designer
can't simply trust that the compelling qualities of the design will
"speak for itself" when she is dealing with an environment as quick
and as extensive as a the web. It is not even just a question of marketability
or representation. Feedback, developed interest and constant dialogue
about a particular design can create an entirely new way of interfacing
clientele, collaborators and consultants. In other words, I am interested
in developing an "e-roundtable" interface for an environment that
would facilitate real-time, design development-oriented conversations.
email correspondence, PicTel presentations and even stream video may
not be enough to create a facile, open-ended environment of dialogue.
This is not going to be a "new and improved" virtual committee meeting
when all parties agree to meet at the same time and sit down in front
of their respective screens in their offices-- but a free-flowing,
real-time, exchange of ideas, data and revisions that occur while
every office, the contractors, architects, engineers, urban planners,
consultants, etc. is working like one self-organizing, self-sustaining
entity in which the final product is as it always is: a complete set
of construction documents or even the built form.

technical
skills: architecture undergraduate, computer graphics applications:
photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver, flash4, 3Dstudio, a bit of coldfusion
experience, etc... e) what to get out of the class: at the moment,
i'm beginning to conceptualize my m.arch thesis toward the design
of physical spaces augmented by information technologies. this summer,
i worked for ove arup and partners (a large engineering firm) to develop
their e-business initiative and gained a sense that, in the near future,
i really want to apply my architectural background to the design of
information spaces. :::last term, i learned about the various legal
and technical issues of online transactions, and our group was given
the opportunity to develop a business proposal by designing a website;
this involved issues such as business content development, user interface
and sequencing, and graphic design. that's my kind of pie. :::this
term the class seems a bit more focused on the information aspect
of the online experience. this e-learning application is very interesting,
as the content we will learn from this can be applied to other information
architectures as well. another tasty pie to swallow.
